Unlike earlier behaviorist theories, information-processing theories do not posit a simple one-to-one mapping between individual rules or knowledge components and individual bits of behavior. We have limited brain power to distribute. The parameters θ, α, and β are used as multipliers to reflect the relative importance of the common and distinctive attribute-sets. In similar fashion, some techniques provide information about brain activity on a millisecond-by-millisecond basis (which corresponds to the timescale for thinking), whereas others indicate brain activity only over much longer time periods such as minutes or hours.

CBT has two critical components: For each instance of cocaine use during treatment, the therapist and patient do a functional analysis, that is, they identify the patient's thoughts, feelings, and circumstances before and after the cocaine use. His subjects memorised a description of 30 individuals who had three potential traits (e.g., Larry is a Jet and liberal, Harry is a Shark and married, Ben is a Jet and unathletic; where Jets and Sharks are clubs; see also later section on similarity).

In MET, responsibility for how patients are to go about changing their behavior is left to the patients; it is assumed that patients can use available resources to change behavior and training is not required. It evokes our strongest passions - lust, love, jealousy, heartbreak, despair, and hope. So, “John gave Mary a necklace” would be represented as: Actor: Act: Object: Direction John ATRANS necklace Mary John A variable, as its name suggests, can take on any of a number of values.

Bertalanffy believed that this was the way we could unify the sciences, including biology, history, sociology, and even psychology, and open the door to a new kind of scientist who is a generalist rather than a specialist. The concepts of “insight” and “restructuring” are attractive because they are easily understood and convey something of the mysterious dynamism of human creativity. General cultural history includes aspects of human social life that are passed across generations and represent collective means of acting and thinking, such as material resources or tools that support thinking and socially organized activities and institutions in which intelligent actions occur.

Freud’s ideas on repression emerged from his clinical experiences, with the repression he claimed to have observed mostly involving traumatic events that had happened to his patients. The two most famous cognitive therapists are Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck. Pick out one of those statements and write it down, as if your friend just said it. It is possible to construct any desired visual pattern by manipulating each of these four properties of gratings.

The implication of these slightly complicated findings is that the inferences were not generated fully, which is in line with the minimalist hypothesis. Contact the Psychology Graduate Office for the necessary paperwork.) The student should submit a written prospectus for a dissertation research project to his or her dissertation committee. However, it is not clear that the general-event level is as important as was suggested by Conway. Despite the fact that cognitive psychology was once criticized for a lack of ecological validity, studying in the growing sub-field can be extremely beneficial because it touches on so many other disciplines.

The syntactic deficiencies of agrammatic aphasics sometimes extend to language comprehension. While dualcoding theory posits distinct symbolic systems, Paivio does not maintain that these distinct systems reside in distinct hemispheres, although the systems are localised to some extent (for evidence against this view see, e.g., Zaidel, 1976). It is better equipped to handle the existence of patients with intact functional or semantic information for objects when presented with their names but greatly impaired visual information about objects (see earlier).

In fact, many of the remaining areas reviewed in this chapter and the next are elaborations of Newell and Simon’s basic views. They named pictures while a small electric current was applied to the exposed cortex. Tyler and Moss (1997) argued that Dr O may also have problems earlier in processing. However, this conclusion has been disputed (Caramazza & Miozzo, 1998). It is assumed that there is more perceptual processing in the read condition than in the generation condition, whereas there is more conceptual processing in the generate condition than in the read condition.

Third, Gibson’s argument that there is no need to postulate internal representations (e.g., memories; sketches) to understand perception is flawed. Most of the evidence discussed in this chapter indicates that people’s judgements and decision making are error-prone. This led Cowan et al. (1998, p. 152) to conclude that, “the leading model of working memory, the phonological loop model…has merit, but is an oversimplification.” What is the value of the phonological loop?
