Much longer time is required for transformation of opal-A to opal-CT under conditions of slow sedimentation and a low geothermal gradient than under conditions of rapid sedimentation and a high geothermal gradient. Fractionation of the lanthanide series elements is used to compute ages since rocks were removed from the mantle. Also, the particles in many mature to supermature sandstones may have been recycled one or more times. Bicarbonate may be abundant, but sulfate content of pore waters is generally much lower than that of marine sediments.

Measuring the orientation of sand-size and smaller particles is more difficult. Nonetheless, they are quite powerful and have served geologists well. The fine particles are retarded by the laminations and added to them, forming the dishes. And igneous and metamorphic rock become sedimentary rock through erosion. Production tests may also give insight in reservoir pressures and connectivity. If we ever find granite on another planet, we can be sure that planet has a complex crustal history.

A slightly different image this week; this comes from the paper I've just had accepted for publication in the Journal of Stuctural Geology. The second involves the study of the Cretaceous-to-Recent sedimentary record in the northernmost Neuquen basin (western Argentina) through traditional field work and detrital zircon analysis. Basaltic lava flows may be interbedded with the sediments. Others have been examined closely and clearly contain few siliceous organisms.
