In 1960 the government established the Institute of Folklore, which published several scholarly works and collected thousands of folk songs. The regime also went to great lengths to bring culture to the countryside, where the vast majority of Albanians lived, by building regional museums, cinemas, and small-scale cultural houses. The most significant development in the Communist period, however, was the Albanian Cultural Revolution (1966–69). This extraordinary development, undertaken during the Chinese phase of Albanian communism, sought to limit the impact of Western culture, eliminate what were deemed as vestiges of backwardness, and destroy obstacles to national unity and modernization.
