The connector and couplings concepts permit reflecting the structure of a process in the mathematical model. The behavior of process steps and phase systems can be represented by mathematical models (see the modeled-by relations in Fig. 1). In order to map the process topology to the model, process ports and connectors have to be related as well as process states and couplings by corresponding modeled-by relations. It must be considered that the relations between process design and model concepts are rather complex.

As hydrogen is fed in excess compared to toluene, reducing the hydrogen feed rate can reduce the amount of hydrogen lost in purge in 09 (see TVA value) as well as the raw material cost, which affects the benefit of the process. Finally, the temperature in the inlet stream to the reactor is optimized (increased) in order to reduce the EWC values of the large streams passing unit E-lOO (pre-heater for the reactor). These suggested changes are implemented and Table 2 shows the improvements in the process and thus in the indicator values for the new process design.
