The development of media studies These changes have modified the relation between the media and intellectuals. The alienation and suspicion of the 1960s and the politicisation of the 1970s have given way to a more pragmatic and precise interest; intellectuals have understood that the problem was not so much to accept or reject mass communications but to understand how they function and to encourage their positive aspects. There are several signs which point to a greater integration between the media and the intelligentsia.

The simultaneous existence of these two apparently contrasting structures, personal and bureaucratic, is not surprising; in fact, the one strengthens the other and vice versa. The weakness of bureaucratic centralism facilitates the rise of powerful ‘barons’ (as the most powerful full professors are often called in Italy). In turn, individual barons at the local level or clusters of barons at the national level supply the Italy: the coming of age of media studies 29 main poles of cohesion and co-ordination in an organisation that, because of the split between the centre and the periphery, would otherwise not be easy to govern at all (Giglioli 1979:41–81).
